This Learning for Personal Interest course will introduce students to the basics of British Sign Language in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Students should leave the course having a basic grasp of BSL grammar, be able to fingerspell their own name, introduce themselves; where they live and work. Give and receive basic information from others including numer (time, age) and have a foundation of basic signs to use in simple conversations.

You will begin each session by being introduced to basic BSL;
Deaf awareness, fingerspelling, basic greetings and everyday conversational signs.
You will learn to fingerspell names and places. Identify the sign name of your local town (if it has one), give and receive information about how you are feeling, where you live and use the local number system.
Half way through the session each week you will be joined by the intermediate students. You will then have an opportunity to practise together and discuss the use of your BSL skills.

You will begin each session joining Entry-level students. You will then have an opportunity to practise together focusing on newly learnt signs. You will have the opportunity to evaluate correct handshapes and none manual features used to modify signs.
The last part of the session will allow you to work on your own signing technique and building your vocabulary along with taking part in conversational topics and learning about grammatical structure.
