On 28th June 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed in Versailles, France, officially ending World War 1. To mark the centenary of this momentous occasion, we’re launching our West Sussex First World War Learning Programme, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. It will tell the story of West Sussex and its communities during the First World War, in partnership with Littlehampton Museum, Crawley Museum and The Novium Museum. Local museums like them are a vital part of our communities, celebrating local history, keeping local memories and stories alive for future generations. All three of these museum are also completely free to enter. We are proud to be working with them, combining their local knowledge with our education skills.
Local community is also the main theme in our schedule of free talks. The programme has plenty of opportunities to commemorate local West Sussex communities and their World War 1 history as well as covering a broad range of topics about the First World War. Revel in the achievements of the Suffragettes during the war with a local Littlehampton historian and author. Consider wartime literature in Burgess Hill. Discover two of the finest houses in Crawley and their reactions to the Great War. Delve into the history of Graylingwell War Hospital in Chichester. It all culminates in our all day Littlehampton event on the 9th July, examining the war-time impact on the local town with four talks by local experts.
If talks are not your thing, don’t worry; we have something for everyone! Our Littlehampton event also offers the chance to sit down and have a cuppa and a chat. The Novium Museum is also putting on a fantastic Family Day, From Trenches to Treaties, also completely free! There is no need to book, just drop in and take part in a range of activities including the chance to get up close and personal with some of the museum’s artefacts. It’s a great time for all ages. We will also be having commemorative poppies created by our students displayed at our Chichester centre from the 10th July. Come and get involved!
The programme runs from 22nd June until 10th July and all events and talks are completely free. See the full programme at www.aspiresussex.org.uk/ww1/. Please note that talks must be booked in advance.
