What is the course about?

This course will be based at The Drill, Horsham.

Weather permitting*, we will be working outside, sketching in The Causeway, a short walk away.

You will be shown how to select a view of a building, ways to measure the proportions and how to get started with your drawing.

You can choose to draw with pencil or a technical waterproof pen and will be shown how to produce a range of tones and textures appropriate for the subject

You will watch a demonstration of how to add watercolour washes to complete your project.

* If the weather is unfavourable we will work indoors, using the tutor’s photos of The Causeway.

What previous experience, knowledge or qualifications do I need for this course?

This is a course for all abilities, but some previous knowledge of drawing would be useful.

What do I need to bring with me?

Several sheets, or a pad of cold pressed watercolour paper, minimum size A4 (you can choose to work larger), HB and 2B pencils, an eraser and sharpener. You can choose to bring a technical pen.

Any watercolour paints you already own, or Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Lemon, Cadmium Red, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Winsor Blue Green Shade and French Ultramarine (or the nearest equivalent to these 6 colours).

Any watercolour brushes you already have, or a medium size round or flat brush.

Plastic palette, 2 plastic water pots, kitchen paper.

A folding chair. You can choose to sit with a drawing board (you can use your watercolour pad instead of a drawing board) on your lap or sit/stand at an easel. A hat is useful in bright lighting conditions. Check the weather and wear clothes suitable for outdoors.

If you have any queries regarding materials, please telephone Aspire Sussex who will arrange for the tutor to contact you.

Are there any additional costs?
