What is the course about?
This is a practical Learning for Personal Interest course with lots of opportunities for getting hands-on experience using a wide variety of techniques. With regular one to one tutorials, you will develop your confidence and creativity, enabling you to produce a unique carving of your own design. You will learn the skills & techniques of woodcarving, both in relief and ‘in the round’. The course will cover the importance of preliminary design and composition; correct use and maintenance of tools and how to apply a variety of carving techniques. You will also learn how to recognise and appreciate of a range of hardwoods and apply surface finishing methods such as stains, oils, polishes.
What previous experience, knowledge or qualifications do I need for this course?
No previous knowledge is required and beginners will learn alongside experienced carvers in a friendly workshop atmosphere sharing information and advice.
What do I need to bring with me?
The tutor will provide a limited range of tools to borrow for the first two sessions. Just wear clothes suitable for practical work and footwear appropriate for a workshop environment.
Are there any additional costs?
Students will be expected to buy their own tools with advice from the tutor about retail and online availability. Approximate cost for a ‘starter kit’ will be in the region of £50.
